R. G.Lake Lure·5 days agoAnother Scam, not even a surprise CONSUMER ALERT Protect Yourself from Health Insurance Scams Friday, June 28, 2024 Some North Carolinians have noticed that they’ve been enrolled in health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace without their knowledge. Often, people are only learning of this enrollment when they file their taxes. If someone other than an insurance company you have selected for your coverage contacts you, be skeptical. And use our tips below to protect yourself from health insurance scams and frauds. Get the name of the business and person calling, as well as the address and phone number. Verify the person contacting you is from the Marketplace. A Marketplace representative will never threaten you or force you into making any decisions before you are ready. If you feel pressured, hang up. Be wary of someone offering you unsolicited free health insurance or a tax refund (whether by phone or in person), even if they say they are from the Marketplace. Health insurance ads on social media or elsewhere that offer you cash, gifts, or other perks, could be a scam. Don’t give out your personal information, such as your banking, credit card, account, or Social Security number in response to these solicitations. If you receive an insurance card in the mail that you are not expecting, contact the Marketplace or seek assistance immediately before using the card. Using the insurance could result in tax liability. You can reach the Marketplace at 1-800-318-2596. If you think you may have been the victim of a scam, contact our office’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or file a complaint online at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint.1Like
R. G.Lake Lure·2+ weeks agoScam Warning CONSUMER ALERT Be on the Lookout for Scam Callers Targeting Families of Incarcerated People Friday, May 3, 2024 The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections recently alerted North Carolinians about scam callers who are targeting the families of incarcerated people. In this scam, bad actors contact family members to inform them that their loved one can be released early only if the person who is incarcerated pays a fee to the NC Post-Release Supervision and Patrol Commission to be fitted with an ankle monitor. However, this offer is not real and families are losing their money. Use our guidelines to know what to look out for and to protect yourself from this scam. The NC Department of Adult Corrections, Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, or other government officials will not call you asking for money in exchange for the early release of your loved one. Only a court has the power to make determinations about early release. They also will not call you to threaten you with legal consequences. Verify the caller. While spoofing is less common than it used to be, scammers can still use technology to make a call appear as if it’s coming from an authentic source. It’s better to hang up, look up the agency’s number on your own, and then call them back. Do not send money or divulge personal information to unknown contacts – even if they say that they represent the government. If you’re unsure if someone is a legitimate government official, hang up and reach out to the government agency directly using a number listed on their website. Remember, if you’re being asked to pay via gift card, it is always a scam. If you receive one of these messages or believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact our office’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or file a complaint online at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint.2Like5

Never share your personal information without properly verifying the person or company is legitimate. R. G.Lake Lure·2+ weeks agoBelow is a warning which while good to have makes me sad, I do not have any solution to this impact of the internet or the decline in standards but I am saddened by it. I am 80 for you young folks work on a solution before you are 80 also. CONSUMER ALERT Be Wary of Military Scammers this Military Appreciation Month Friday, May 31, 2024 May is National Military Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the 94,369 selfless active-duty service members from North Carolina and the sacrifices they make for our nation. Unfortunately, scams that target servicemembers and veterans are more common than you might think. Members of the military and their relatives can be vulnerable to scams and fraud because they travel frequently and do business in new places with unfamiliar companies. Their families may also be targeted by criminals who seek to take advantage of their fears and concerns about their loved one’s safety. Follow our tips to avoid military scammers: •Do not pay upfront on loans or credit cards. Some scammers will try to lure in vulnerable military families with advance fee loan scams. Be on the lookout for loan brokers who try to pressure you into paying them in advance for a loan. Remember, it is against North Carolina law to charge an advance fee on a credit card or loan. •Speed check: slow down when shopping for cars at the dealership. Some sellers will use unfair business practices, particularly on used vehicles, to target service members. Be sure to look into the car's history and check in with a mechanic before you sign and drive off the lot. •Beware of those faking a military connection. Sometimes scammers will attempt to lower your guard by claiming a connection to or referencing the military. Just because a business alleges that they are for servicemembers, doesn't mean they are. Don't be fooled by those exploiting your patriotism and service. •Seek the assistance of a Veterans Affairs accredited representative, attorney, or Veterans Service Organization. Some unaccredited people and companies engage in questionable practices, including charging high prices for completing and submitting documents to the VA for people applying for veteran benefits. When applying for veteran benefits, use a VA-accredited claims agent, VA-accredited attorney, or a recognized Veterans Services Organization, which can be found at https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits/vso-search. •Avoid Veterans Choice Program scams. Make sure to call the real number: 866-606-8198. If you're not sure you're on the line with the actual Veterans Choice Program, hang up and start over. For more information or tips to protect yourself or a loved one, view our Military Scam Guide here. R. G.Lake Lure·2+ weeks agoWarning in case you did not receive email. CONSUMER ALERT Received a Late Toll Fee Text? It Might Be a Scam. Friday, April 26, 2024 Our office has recently been made aware of reports of fake robo-texts pretending to be a toll road collection service. The message claims you owe money for unpaid tolls. The scam threatens a late fee and says that to “avoid” the fee, you can click a link included in the text message. This is an inventive take on the traditional phishing scam, where hackers try to get you to click on an unsafe link so they can either gain access to your phone or get you to input sensitive personal and financial information. Follow our tips below to ensure you do not fall victim to this scam: Do not click any links in text messages that you receive out of the blue or from unknown numbers. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority will never send you a text requesting payment for unpaid toll fees. You can contact them or learn more here. If you receive a robo-text from a suspicious number, just delete the message. And if you click on the link sent in the message, make sure to file a complaint with our office at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint. Also, be sure to take the extra steps to monitor your personal information and accounts so you can dispute any unfamiliar charges. Scammers are creative, coming up with new tricks every day to scam unsuspecting North Carolinians. Our office is working to fight back against robocallers and robo-texts. If you believe that you have been the victim of a scam, contact our office’s Consumer Protection Division at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint or 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.Be the first to reactLike1
